Allina Mental Health Outpatient Partial Hospitalization Program and Day Treatment
Allina Health Partial Hospital & Day Treatment Program Requirements
Intermediate Levels of Care
About Programs
PHP and Day Treatment programs are an effective alternative to, or step-down from hospitalization. These services are available for patients who need an intermediate level of care for a mental health condition. The difference between PHP and Day Treatment is the frequency and duration of the services.
Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP)
PHP’s are highly intensive programs that meet M-F for six hours per day. They incorporate group psychotherapy and education groups, as well as close monitoring by psychiatry. PHP can be used as a stepdown from hospitalization or preventative care for individuals experiencing an acute crisis, where hospitalization could be averted by participation in partial hospitalization services.
Adult PHP: The program is designed to support patients experiencing severe episodes of variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and other interpersonal stressors. The program meets for approximately 3 weeks ages 18+. The program offers structure and support using cognitive therapy in a group therapy setting that includes skills, psycho-education groups, psychotherapy, and may include adjunct groups around spirituality and pharmacist led groups. Patients receive individual psychiatric medication appointments two to three times a week. Structured programming led by a team of psychiatrist/CNP, Therapists, and RN/Care coordinator helps prevent and reduce hospitalization and support patients in their home
Adolescent PHP: Program meets for approximately 3-4 weeks for adolescents ages 13-18. Programming focuses on therapy and family dynamics and includes group psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, psychiatric evaluation and management, nursing assessments, parent support groups, family therapy, planning for returning to school. A parent/legal guardian must be present to complete the admission intake on the first morning. Parents/legal guardian must be available for daily contact with staff by phone and an in-person family therapy session (times vary).
Day Treatment Services (DT)
Day Treatment is a half-day program that meets 3 days per week for an average of three hours per day. The focus is on group psychotherapy, living skills groups and improving overall quality of life. Day Treatment does not currently offer access to medical prescribers for medication checks. Participants are required to have an outpatient provider for those purposes. Individuals who attend Day Treatment may have more ongoing mental health concerns that require a higher level of care than an outpatient therapist (outpatient therapy and medication management) but do not meet the level of acuity for PHP.
Adolescents must be attending school in the community and transportation needs to be coordinated by parent/guardian.
